It certainly is winter time around here, as the late fall snowfalls are sure to remind us that winter is ready for us! With the holidays all around us, here are some reminders and quick tips to keep your home warm and inviting this winter.
Exterior
During the winter, the last place we usually want to be working is outside. Here are a few things we should still check and do to make sure to protect our homes from the outside elements.
Snow Cover
When the treacherous snow falls and covers our sidewalks and driveways, it is important to remember the do’s and don’ts for removing the snow.
- Always shovel when possible, de-icing salt can cause surface damage to the concrete.
- If you have to use salt (due to ice or other reasons), remember to clean the sidewalk/ driveway thoroughly after the snow or ice has melted.
Hose Bibs
To prevent damage to your outside water sources make sure you disconnect hoses from hose bibs and drain the water out of the hoses.
Weather-stripping
Check the weather-stripping around all doors to be sure there are no cold drafts are entering the house around your exterior doors. Weather-stripping can dry-rot and breakdown and should be replaced to seal in the warmth in your home.
